γ-Ray Pulsars: Emission Zones and Viewing Geometries
نویسنده
چکیده
There are now a half dozen young pulsars detected in high energy photons by the Compton GRO, showing a variety of emission efficiencies and pulse profiles. We present here a calculation of the pattern of high energy emission on the sky in a model which posits γ-ray production by charge depleted gaps in the outer magnetosphere. This model accounts for the radio to γ-ray pulse offsets of the known pulsars, as well as the shape of the high energy pulse profiles. We also show that ∼ 1/3 of emitting young radio pulsars will not be detected due to beaming effects, while ∼ 2.5× the number of radio-selected γ-ray pulsars will be viewed only high energies. Finally we compute the polarization angle variation and find that the previously misunderstood optical polarization sweep of the Crab pulsar arises naturally in this picture. These results strongly support an outer-magnetosphere location for the γ−ray emission. Subject headings: pulsars — gamma rays — polarization

An Atlas for Interpreting Γ-ray Pulsar Light Curves
We have simulated a population of young spin-powered pulsars and computed the beaming pattern and light curves for the three main geometrical models: polar cap emission, two-pole caustic (“slot gap”) emission and outer magnetosphere emission. The light curve shapes depend sensitively on the magnetic inclination α and viewing angle ζ. We present the results as maps of observables such as peak mu...
متن کاملNon-thermal emissions from outer magnetospheric accelerators of middle-aged pulsars
We discuss γ-ray emissions from the outer gap accelerators of middle-aged pulsars for part of the series of our studies. A two-dimensional electrodynamic model is used to solve the distribution of accelerating electric fields with electron and positron pair creation and radiation processes in the magnetic meridional plane. We compute the curvature radiation and the synchrotron radiation by solv...
متن کاملConstraints on Off-Axis X-Ray Emission from Beamed GRBs
We calculate the prompt x–ray emission as a function of viewing angle for beamed Gamma–Ray Burst (GRB) sources. Prompt x-rays are inevitable due to the less highly blueshifted photons emitted at angles ∼> 1/γ relative to the beam symmetry axis, where γ is the expansion Lorentz factor. The observed flux depends on the combinations γ∆θ and γθv, where ∆θ is the beaming angle and θv is the viewing ...
متن کاملGamma-ray Emission Properties from Mature Pulsars in the Galaxy and in the Gould Belt
We study the γ-ray emission properties of pulsars by using a new selfconsistent outer gap model. The outer gap can exist in pulsars with age over million years old if the effect of magnetic inclination angle as well as the average properties of the outer gap are considered. The mature γ-ray pulsars, whose ages are between 0.3 to 3 million years old, are able to move up to high galactic latitude...
متن کاملPopulation statistics study of radio and gamma - ray pulsars in the Galactic plane
We present results of our pulsar population synthesis of ordinary isolated and millisecond pulsars in the Galactic plane. Over the past several years, a program has been developed to simulate pulsar birth, evolution and emission using Monte Carlo techniques. We have added to the program the capability to simulate millisecond pulsars, which are old, recycled pulsars with extremely short periods....
